Attendance and Leave Policy

Choosing McLain High School

Jefferson County Public Schools is committed to providing a variety of learning opportunities to meet the diverse needs of students. McLain High School provides Alternative Education Campus (AEC) eligible students a choice to attend a school other than their assigned neighborhood school. The Jeffco District reserves the right to rescind and/or amend a student’s school assignment, including reassigning students to other schools, if it determines the student no longer satisfies the eligibility criteria or required level of performance required by the school or program. Attendance and Academic Performance Expectations

By choosing to enroll at McLain students must agree to fulfill the attendance and academic performance expectations listed below to remain a full time student. Students who do not fulfill these expectations in one or more classes in a quarter will be placed on Leave and/or Probation the following quarter. A student can only be placed on Leave TWICE. While on Leave a student can earn the right to return as a full time student the following quarter.

Attendance Performance Expectations

  • Regular school attendance is the number one factor in determining a student’s on-time graduation from high school.
  • Students who reach 6 unexcused absences to any one class or period in a quarter will be placed on Attendance Leave.
  • A student’s placement on Attendance Leave will occur immediately upon the 6th absence or at the conclusion of the quarter for the next quarter.
  • All absences are unexcused unless a doctor’s note or court excuse is presented.
  • Students who leave (ditch out or skip) will be marked unexcused for the entire day.
  • Three tardies to any one class counts as one unexcused absence to a class.
  • A student may earn credit for the class in which they fail to meet the attendance requirement.

Academic Performance Expectations

  • Students are expected to pass every class they are enrolled in each quarter.
  • If a student fails to pass all classes in one quarter they will be placed on Academic Probation for the next quarter. Any student who does not pass ALL classes during their quarter of Academic Probation will be placed on Academic Leave the next quarter.

Attendance and Academic Leave Requirements

  • Complete 0.25 credits or more in an assigned course with a passing grade of 60%.
  • If this is your 2nd time on Academic or Attendance Leave you must complete a full 0.5 credit or more.
  • Each student will be assigned a class by a McLain Counselor.
  • Additional coursework will be assigned if the required amount is completed prior to the end of the Leave session.
  • Coursework must be completed by the last day of the quarter at 8:30 pm.
  • Students can complete online work at home, however time spent working outside of designated Leave hours DOES NOT count toward the attendance minimum.
  • Students must attend at least 7 of 9 Leave Sessions. When a student is absent a third Leave session they will be dis-enrolled from McLain.
  • Three tardies counts as one unexcused absence.
  • Students who leave the room for longer than 10 minutes will be sent home and counted absent for the day.
  • If students require a break they must sign out and back in.
  • NO EXITING the building. Once a student enters the building for class they cannot exit the building during class without the expressed permission from an administrator or Leave teacher. Any students who exits the building during class will be counted absent for the day and sent home.
  • Students are not allowed on McLain property on any day except Wednesday during Leave.
  • Any student who arrives after 1:10 pm during the day leave schedule and 6:10 pm during the night leave schedule will NOT be allowed to attend that day and will be counted absent and sent home.
  • All McLain LIVE students will be assigned to Leave during the day and students from other programs will be assigned by their program administrator.

Leave schedules will occur on Wednesdays.

Day Schedule: 1:00 – 3:30pm Evening Schedule: 6:00 – 8:30pm

Work Opportunity

Dis-Enrollment from McLain High School

Any student that does not meet an expectation during their time on Leave will be dis-enrolled from McLain High School and transitioned to a more suitable educational setting, which may include a return to the home high school or another alternative setting.

Communicating Academic Leave Progress

During the quarter there will be 2 progress reports sent home to allow both parents and students to monitor progress. Each report will indicate what class and credits are assigned, what percent has been completed so far, and what grade the student is currently earning. The final grade and number of credits earned will be calculated the last day of the quarter.
