Career & College

McLain Students creating sidewalk art.

McLain High School staff understands that high school is not just a stepping stone to college but a launchpad to various life paths. That's why we offer an array of postsecondary options to guide our students toward a fulfilling future, whatever that may look like for them.

For those interested in serving our country, a career in the military offers not only the chance to protect and serve but also provides exceptional benefits like educational scholarships, job security and leadership training. The discipline and skills acquired in military service are invaluable and can set the foundation for a successful life.

Local apprenticeships are another avenue McLain actively promotes, particularly in booming fields like construction. These programs offer hands-on experience and often lead to full-time employment upon completion. Proximity to local companies allows students to easily transition from the classroom to the job site, gaining practical skills along the way.

College-bound? McLain works closely with Red Rocks Community College, conveniently located just down the road, to help students prepare for the academic rigors of college life. From course selection to financial aid, McLain offers guidance every step of the way.

For students still exploring their options, career planning comes into play. Using tools like WorkKeys testing, McLain helps students identify their strengths and interests. The school also offers multiple field trips to various companies, exposing students to industries and career paths they might not have considered.

At McLain High School, your future is not a one-size-fits-all scenario. It's a tailored journey, and McLain staff are here to help you navigate it successfully.

College Planning

McLain works with local colleges to support graduates in determining their best pathway after graduation. McLain hosts an annual college day the first week of November. Students take multiple college tours throughout the school year, and McLain has an annual FAFSA and financial aid presentation for students planning to pursue further education.

Career Planning

McLain prioritizes career exploration and planning. McLain has many opportunities throughout the year to expose students to career pathways, including fall and spring community job fairs, a career speaker series, an onsite construction day and Future Week, which includes days for military, apprenticeships and college.

McLain students take career field trips in their individual classes as well as schoolwide, including districtwide and metro-area career events.

Career & College Pathways in Jeffco

Career and college pathways are a series of educational opportunities that enable students to pursue careers, college and interests after high school. Career and college readiness is a Jeffco Public Schools graduation requirement and is increasingly important, as three out of every four jobs now require education or training beyond high school.

It’s important for students to talk with their families, teachers and school counselors throughout high school as career interests emerge and develop, and to explore different college and career pathways.
