Learning Communities
Welcome to the diverse world of programs at McLain Community High School, where we believe that one size does not fit all when it comes to education.
Whether you're a young student seeking an alternative learning environment, an adult striving to complete your diploma or someone in between, McLain has a program designed to meet your unique needs and aspirations.
From RISE's interactive setting for younger students to Peak's focus on at-risk youth, from Summit's flexible scheduling to the Adult Diploma and Discovery program – as well as the comprehensive GED program – each offering is crafted to provide students with the tools, skills and support they need to succeed.
McLain classrooms are equipped with technological resources to enhance engagement and facilitate hands-on learning when appropriate. Students are issued Chromebooks that they bring to and from school.
Coursework for most classes is housed online allowing students the opportunity to make up missing work remotely at their convenience.
RISE
RISE is designed to create success for students who struggle in a traditional setting and includes experiential and direct instruction. RISE is an interactive alternative for 14- and 15-year-old students needing ninth- and 10th-grade credits and prepares students for a successful transition to another McLain program or school of choice.
Peak
Peak is for students 16-20 years old. McLain serves at-risk students who have been unsuccessful in their traditional high school due to personal or academic challenges. In addition to the core curriculum, students have access to experiential education, social and vocational opportunities.
Summit
Summit is a small learning community that offers a variety of unique opportunities to get students to the graduation stage. Schedules have a level of flexibility that accommodates students with busy lives. Optional extension classes and concurrent enrolment opportunities are available for students who can handle longer days to earn credit faster.
Adult Diploma Program
Adult Diploma program provides adult students with a quality program to help them finally receive their diploma. In addition to the core curriculum, it also uses the Discovery program. The purpose of Discovery is to learn and practice the social and emotional skills necessary to be responsible and effective in school, home, and work environments, and within the larger community.
GED
The McLain GED program has an educational goal that all students not only pass the GED but are also informed and prepared for a career or post-secondary education. A significant number of in-building resources and relationships in the community guide students in taking those next steps. McLain works with students to develop an instructional study plan that best suits their academic readiness as determined by the GED READY pre-test.
